Current Opportunity

Dancewear & Pointe Fitting Specialist

Wellington | 3–5 days per week

We’re looking for someone to join our Wellington store and become an important part of the team.

This is a hands-on role for someone who enjoys people, takes responsibility and likes the idea of learning something a little different.

You’ll be helping dancers and their families find the right dancewear, footwear and accessories, while learning the specialist side of our business — including pointe shoe fitting.

As you become more confident in the role, there’s the opportunity to take on more responsibility within the store, including opening and closing, working independently and helping keep the day-to-day running smoothly.

What you’ll be doing

Your days will be varied, but could include:

• Helping customers find the right dancewear, shoes and accessories
• Fitting dance footwear and learning our pointe fitting process
• Developing specialist product and fitting knowledge
• Helping dancers and parents feel comfortable and confident in their purchases
• Keeping the store organised, welcoming and beautifully presented
• Receiving, processing and merchandising new stock
• Processing sales, orders, exchanges and customer enquiries
• Opening and closing the store
• Working independently when required
• Building relationships with dancers, parents and local dance studios
• Supporting the wider Ashley Ellen Dance team

The person we're looking for

We’re looking for someone who is:

Reliable.
Someone we can trust to show up, take responsibility and look after the store and our customers.

Confident.
You’re comfortable talking to people, making recommendations and working independently.

Warm and approachable.
Our customers range from little first-time dancers to professional dancers, parents and teachers. Making people feel welcome is a big part of what we do.

Organised.
You notice what needs doing and get stuck in rather than waiting to be asked.

Curious.
There is a lot to learn in this business, particularly when it comes to fitting. We want someone who genuinely enjoys learning and developing their knowledge.

A team player.
We’re a small team, so communication, reliability and helping each other out are important.

Do I need dance experience?

Not necessarily.

Dance experience or previous dance retail experience is a bonus, but it’s not the most important thing to us.

You might already work in retail, fashion, footwear, fitness, education or another customer-facing role.

What matters most is that you’re great with people, willing to learn, have good attention to detail and can take ownership of your work.

Pointe fitting experience is not required.

We’ll provide training and gradually build your knowledge and confidence before you take on pointe fittings yourself.

Learn something specialised

Pointe fitting is a big part of what makes Ashley Ellen Dance different.

It’s not simply about finding a shoe in the right size. It’s about understanding the dancer, their feet, their training, their strength and what they need from their shoes.

For the right person, this role provides the opportunity to develop genuine specialist knowledge and eventually become a trained pointe fitter as part of our team.

We love teaching people who are genuinely interested in learning.

As your experience develops, there may also be opportunities to take on additional responsibility within the Wellington store.

Ashley Ellen Dance started as a family business with a simple goal — to provide dancers with beautiful, quality products and genuinely knowledgeable service.

Today, we have stores in Palmerston North and Wellington, an online store, specialist pointe fitting services and a growing wholesale business supplying Virtisse pointe shoes across New Zealand and Australia.

We’re still proudly family-run, and that’s something we want to keep at the heart of the business as we grow.

We care about doing things well, looking after our customers and creating a store environment that feels welcoming to dancers at every stage of their journey.
